About

This blog is about saving money. The combination of global warming mitigation attempts, use of food crops for motor fuel and (in the US, at least) the prospect of rising taxes has made many of us tighten our budgets. Regardless of one’s political views, country or state of residence or even income, saving money is a good thing.

Many of the suggestions and ideas on this blog are energy-related. Whether you want to save energy to save money, make alternative energy sources practical or help save the environment, these suggestions are likely to help. With high energy prices for fossil fuels, and now for some biofuels, even a small energy savings could result in significant financial savings.

When I was young I learned about soil and water conservation in the Boy Scouts. We learned about acid rain, soil pollution saving energy. I learned that the aquifer that served my city was in danger of being depleted in the distant future: the early 21st century…

I graduated high school in the US in the mid-1970’s. High school speech competitions often had topics related to the environment. My senior year someone won with a speech about a new idea: global warming. That was over thirty years ago. At that time nobody knew the financial impact it would have on our country and the world.

When I was in college, Love Canal was big news. No talk of global warming, global cooling, running out of fossil fuels or water. More pedestrian concerns like run-away inflation and the end of the Vietnam war took our focus.

Now in the first decade of the twenty-first century the impact of all these environmental issues is becoming clear. Higher fuel and food costs are hitting all of us. This blog is an attempt to help reduce those costs.

Most of what you read here I have done personally or have been able to share the experiences of friends. It is my hope that these techniques can help you, too.
